INTRODUCTION to

         SHAOLIN TEMPLE 
    


  
  Shaolin Temple is one of the most famous temples among Chinese Buddhist constructions, well-known cradle of zen, a world-famous Wushu hotspot. in Chinese history, it occupies important position. Therefore it is thought as the first temple in the world.  Because it is located in the lush jungle below the Mt.Shaoshi, hinterland of Songshan Mountain, Dengfeng, it is named Shaolin Temple.
    
  In Taihe 19th year of North Wei dynasty (495 A.C), emperor Xiaowen in order to arrange for several Indian hierarches' living and  missionizing, ordered to build the temple by the mount Shaoshi. Demo, the 28th generation Buddha of  Mochejaye's of Sakyamuni's great prentice , through seas, passing Guangzhou, by Nanjing, across Changjiang river northward, in the end got to Shaolin Temple. After his arrival he took in lots of chiliasts and imparted zen to them by himself, so he is titled as initiator of Chinese zen, as a result, Shaolin Temple is looked on as the origin of Chinese Buddhist zen.   Shaolin Temple is famed for its zen and wushu. In Sui and Tang dynasty, its reputation has been spread out widely; in Song dynasty, Shaolin wushu has formed its own  system of different style, called "Shaolin Faction".  It gradually became the outstanding one in Chinese Wushu faction; in Yuan and Ming dynasty, the quantity of monks in the temple has gotten to two thousand and the temple turned into a large-scale temple noted at home and abroad; from middle period of Qing dynasty the temple came to downfall generally.
  Though passing many years' hard time, Shaolin Temple still keep quite a lot of cultural relics. For example, there are over 400 blocks of carved stones made after North Qi dynasty; about 250 brick-stone-structure grave towers built between Tang and Qing dynasty; among them, the  Great Hall in  Initiator's Nunnery  built in North Song; large color fresco of 500 monks painted in Ming dynasty, Shaolin boxing charts of Qing dynasty and Tang dynasty's color fresco about the story of thirteen monks' saving Tang emperor and so on, take the relatively important position in the study of Chinese history, art and science.
